The Pieterpad - in 2 stages - 310 mi of Hiking Pleasure
The 'Pieterpad' route runs from Pieterburen in Groningen to the Sint Pietersberg in Limburg, near Maastricht. This well-marked route is mostly flat to gently rolling. The journey is divided into two distinct stages, which can be booked separately.
The Pieterpad - Part 1 - From Pieterburen to Vorden
The northern section of this route leads from the flat, expansive lands of Groningen to the quiet Drenthe forests and heathlands. Starting at the renowned seal center in Pieterburen, every step offers new surprises: ancient dikes, vast fields, historic villages, and authentic Saxon farms. Walk along babbling brooks, through extensive forests, and over rolling sand hills. After passing through Goose City Coevorden, continue through the best of Overijssel: pristine nature on the Sallandse Heuvelrug, idyllic peace in the Twente bocage, and charming villages and towns. Each day offers a unique mix of culture, history, and natural beauty for both avid hikers and leisurely nature lovers.
The Pieterpad - Part 2 - From Vorden to Maastricht
The southern section starts in picturesque Vorden, with its beautiful castle. Walk through the delightful, characterful Achterhoek, the quiet Montferland forests, and historic towns like 's-Heerenberg. Climb the Nijmegen moraine and enjoy the beautiful land of Maas and Waal. Then comes perhaps the crown jewel of the Pieterpad: the stretch through Limburg. Rolling chalk hills, 'grubben' and caves, lush vineyards, and picturesque villages. Discover the land of castles, chapels, and monasteries, the nature-rich Maasduinen, and stroll through old Maastricht. Finish on the Pietersberg, with breathtaking views over the Limburg marl country. This is a 'must' for anyone who wants to explore the Netherlands on foot!
